Talking to Your Children About the Election

img_8233

This election could possibly be the most embittered in all of our nation’s history. There have been so many harsh words and out-of-control emotions from the candidates and the supporters on both sides. I am sure children of all ages have heard an adult making passionate comments about a candidate. So we need to discuss with our children what this time in our country is all about.

First of all we need to tell them that God is the King of kings and rules over all the world.  1 Timothy 6:15 tells us that “God is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords”. Acknowledge this often with your children.

Then share with them that God gives us opportunity to seek out people to lead us – that is why we have an election. Read and share with your children the story in 1 Samuel 16 where God gave Samuel the job to seek out a king for His people. This is what He told Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”(1 Samuel 16:7)

Lead your children in praying that everyone will look for and vote for leaders with good hearts. Samuel anointed David to be the new king.  God was very pleased – look what He said about David – “After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’(Acts 13:22)”

It may seem as none of the candidates in this election fit this description and the options are to vote for the lesser of the two evils or not vote at all. But not voting at all is the third evil. Let your children see you exercise your patriotic freedom to have a voice in government – take them to the poll with you if possible and let them hear you pray for wisdom to know for whom to vote.

Then when the election is over, remember “God determines the course of world events; he removes kings and sets others on the throne. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars. (Daniel 2:21)” We need to remind ourselves of this no matter who wins and explain it to our children.

Regardless of how one might feel about the winner, there is never a reason to talk unkindly about that person. Read and tell your children the story from 1 Kings 24. King Saul had been trying to kill David. But when David was faced with an opportunity to kill King Saul, he said “May the Lord not let me put out my hand against my leader, for he is the Lord’s chosen one.”

Finally, take heed to this exhortation from the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people-for kings and all those in authority”.  After this election it becomes our duty to pray for and – what is that last thing – um – give thanks for all those in authority. I must admit that, although I have prayed for our authorities, I have not given thanks for them. I want to purpose to intercede for our next president and give thanks for the one God has chosen to accomplish His purposes in our country (which just might be judgement) .

So use this election as another opportunity to establish God’s Word in your children. Make them aware that God has put in positions those whom He has purposed to be there (Daniel 2:21), and no matter who is in authority, God is still the King of kings and in control of everything (1 Tim. 6:15). And make a regular part of your praying with your children be for protection, wisdom, good hearts, and thanks for our leaders (1 Tim. 2:1-2).

Scriptures to Encourage Moms

Just wanted to give a few scriptures to encourage us moms.  God’s Word is relevant no matter what season of motherhood we are in – whether our children are helpless infants and need our assistance in their daily activities, or they are grown adults whom we are helpless to assist in their daily struggles:

1 Thessalonians 5:24

Faithful is he that calls you, who also will do it.

Exodus 33:14

And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Psalm 94:13

That You may give him rest from the days of adversity, Until the pit is dug for the wicked. (rest means power to calm myself)

Psalm 94:19

In the multitude of my anxieties within me, Your comforts delight my soul.

Psalm 131:2

Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me.

 Isaiah 26:3

You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You,  Because he trusts in You.

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Col. 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

2 Tim. 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Psalm 34:5

Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy;  no shadow of shame will darken their faces.

So Moms, let us look to God unashamedly and radiate with joy, because God has entrusted us with the greatest privilege in the world!!!!

Please share with us what scriptures bring encouragement to you in your role as mom?

Ideas for Day Six of Passion Week

picture from Read and Share Bible

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me—that Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.  He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, as the Scriptures said.
1 Cor. 15:3-4

Day Six of Passion Week is the day that Jesus was put on the cross.  It is  the most crucial focal point in history. Think with your children about the agony He went through  – betrayal, arrest, false accusations, abandonment, beatings, harassment, and finally being nailed to a cross. –  all this for someone Else’s sins.   It’s Friday, but Sunday’s coming is a video that depicts some of what was happening.

Resurrection Eggs is a wonderful teaching aid for helping your children visualize what Jesus was going through.  Each egg contains a different symbol such as 3 coins, leather strip, crown of thorns, 3 nails, etc.   It comes with a booklet telling the story related to each symbol and can be purchased at most Christian book stores.  Click here or here for excellent instructions on making your own! There’s even a video here of making the eggs.

Save your colored egg shells to make a cross like the one in this picture.  Cut a cross out of cardboard; cover it in glue; then sprinkle the crushed egg shells on it.  Share with your children as you are making this that just as these egg shells are broken to make a beautiful picture, Jesus’ body was broken for us us to make our lives beautiful and free from the punishment for sin.

Ideas for Day Five of Passion Week

“If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
Mark 9:35

Read about the full day Jesus had as His impending death was fast approaching on Day Five of Passion Week.

During His Last Supper that evening, His disciples were arguing about who would have the greatest positions.  He settled the argument by washing their feet and demonstrating that the greatest among them truly was the Servant of all.  (We might use this the next time there’s an argument over who gets to sit where, etc.  Say, ‘the one with the servant attitude will have the favor’)

Read the story from a children’s Bible.  If you don’t have one yet, I recommend several here. This picture is taken from My Awesome God Bible Storybook .

Act out the story.

Follow Jesus’ example. Wash each other’s feet.  All day long talk about and look for ways to serve one another.

Color Eggs. Tell your children you are serving them by boiling the eggs for them to color.  Then as you color them, talk about why eggs are colored at Easter time.

  • Eggs represent new life which can remind us of the new life Christ Jesus gives us by what He did on the Cross for us.   Share this scripture: When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun! – 2 Cor. 5:17 (Living)
  • The colored eggs remind us of how beautiful our world is as the earth comes back to life again with colorful flowers, new leaves, and green grass in the Spring as all creation seems to rejoice that Jesus is alive (Matt. 28:6)! Share these scripture:
    Jesus makes all things new.
    Revelation 21:5
God gives us all things to enjoy. 1 Tim. 6:17
All Your works shall praise You, O Lord . . . Psalm 145:10
